Filled star Filled star Filled star Filled star Half-filled star Playtime: 2h 36m. A delightful little game that has been sitting on my Steam library for I don’t know how long. It is easy to see why it is such a classic. So many interesting gameplay ideas implemented with simple controls: directional and 2 buttons, jump and action. Still on the “doing so much with so little” topic, there is also an interesting story being told during the bloodshed playthrough. ...

Go Hugo!

My personal blog moved from https://tinsuke.wordpress.com to https://blog.tinsuke.com. I also brought over the modern content, and might even import the old posts, who knows. This website is powered by Hugo and hosted on Codeberg Pages (source here). ...

Horizon Forbidden West

Filled star Filled star Filled star Filled star Hollow star Playtime: 134h 30m. Wow, how did I play this game for so long? I don’t know, the game loop of hunting and bringing down machines is entertaining enough (but so it was on the first game too), and I hopefully kept on going, looking for that spark of magic that made me fall in love with Zero Dawn. ...

How To: Migrate PhotoPrism DB from SQLite to MariaDB on FreeBSD

Thanks to the porting efforts of huo-ju (photoprism-freebsd-port) and psa (libtensorflow1-freebsd-port), it is quite easy to get PhotoPrism up and running on a FreeBSD system or jail. The port uses SQLite 3 for the DB implementation by default, and while that runs fine for a few thousand pictures, things start slowing down a bit when reaching the tens of thousands. This post will help you to migrate your PhotoPrism FreeBSD installation from SQLite to MariaDB. ...

How To: Install py-paperless-ngx on FreeBSD 13

Disclaimer: TrueNAS CORE 13.3-RELEASE has been released, and if you update to it, you can just run pkg install py-paperless-ngx and profit! If, for some reason, you can’t update to 13.3, this guide might still be useful. Since February of 2024, thanks to Michael Gmelin (grembo), Paperless-ngx is available as an official port for FreeBSD: deskutils/py-paperless-ngx. But upon closer inspection, one can see that the port is only available for FreeBSD versions 14 and 15. FreeBSD 14 is available since November 2023, so users have had some time to upgrade to it and, therefore, there’s no problem with py-paperless-ngx not being available for FreeBSD 13, right? Well… that could be the case, were it not for some of us, users of TrueNAS CORE, currently on version 13.0-U6.1, which runs on FreeBSD 13.1, and will see its final version, 13.3, which was expected to launch in Q2 2024, running on FreeBSD 13.3. So we are somewhat stuck with FreeBSD 13. At least until something like zVault is able to offer an upgrade path to TrueNAS CORE users. ...

An RTX 4090 GPU laying besides a much smaller a GT 1030

My RTX 4090 Founders Edition RMA experience

Here I’ll tell you my journey going through a RMA with NVIDIA in order to replace my expensive and perfectly functioning graphics card. On the first weekend of December 2023, I upgraded my gaming PC from AM4 to AM5. I was sporting an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X CPU (I went bonkers on the core count there because I was initially allowed to use my personal PC for work during the plague) on an ASRock X570 Taichi Motherboard and thought time was right to upgrade my build to an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D on a Gigabyte B650E AORUS MASTER (caps not mine!). The jump to AM5, DDR5 and an X3D processor seemed like a good fit to go with such a beast as my RTX 4090 Founders Edition. ...

Epistory - Typing Chronicles

Filled star Filled star Filled star Half-filled star Hollow star Playtime: 5h 30m. A byte-sized review for a byte-sized game. I grabbed this one for free from Epic as I was quite interested on its typing gameplay. You wander around mounted on a fox, typing words to either decorate or unblock your path, or to beat enemies during combat sequences that proved somewhat challenging and quite engaging. ...

A Plague Tale: Requiem

Filled star Filled star Filled star Half-filled star Hollow star Playtime: 26h. For a long time I have wanted to keep track of the games I played and my opinions on them. Both for the sake of keeping some sort of log, and to send to friends, when I get asked about game suggestions. Too bad I didn’t start earlier, but there is no point trying to change the past (as most time travel games seem to agree on) and better now than later. Or never. After having loved the first game and finding it a impressive show for a small studio, this sequence is a bag of mixed feelings to me. ...
